Making Good Homes Work Better
Thoughtful remodeling for people who care about their homes.
Prairie Home Improvement helps Twin Cities homeowners make established and older homes work better for the way they live now. Bathrooms, kitchens, basements, attics, and other interior remodeling—thoughtfully planned, clearly communicated, and built for real life.
Which Space Are You Thinking About Remodeling?
Bathrooms
From straightforward updates to complete transformations, we remodel bathrooms to work better for the people who use them every day.
Kitchens
Beautiful, thoughtful kitchens built around your style, your house, your space, and the way you actually use it.
Basements and attics can add useful living space to a home when they’re thoughtfully planned around the structure and existing constraints.

Start With the House
Every remodeling project begins with a house that already exists. It has a history, a layout, things that work, things that don’t, and sometimes a few surprises hidden behind the walls.
We think good remodeling starts by understanding what’s already there—then figuring out what needs to change and what doesn’t.
That might mean finding a better layout for a small bathroom, opening up a kitchen while working around structure and mechanicals, or making an older space work better without trying to turn the whole house into something it was never meant to be.
The goal isn’t to remodel for a design magazine. It’s to remodel for the way you actually live.
The house in its farmhouse days.

Life Changes. Your Home Can Too.
Most people don’t remodel just because something new would look nice.
Families grow. Kids get older. Parents get older. People start working from home. A bathroom that was tolerable for years becomes frustrating. A kitchen that once worked doesn’t anymore. Sometimes people simply reach the point where they’re ready to invest in a home they’ve lived in and cared about for a long time.
You don’t need to arrive with a finished design or know exactly what the answer is. Part of our job is helping you think through the possibilities and figure out what makes sense for your house, your neighborhood, your priorities, and your budget.
A good remodeling project should make your home better to live in.
A Different Kind of Remodeling Company
From Nate, Owner of Prairie Home Improvement
Hi! I’m Nate, the founder and owner of Prairie Home Improvement, a small, independent remodeling company serving homeowners in the Twin Cities. I’ve kept the company small on purpose. It allows me to stay personally involved in the projects we take on and maintain the kind of direct relationship with homeowners that I think good remodeling requires.
When you work with Prairie Home, you won’t be handed from a salesperson to a designer to a project manager you’ve never met. I’m involved from the first conversations about your project through the work itself.
I’ve been remodeling homes for a long time, and I’ve learned that good remodeling depends on more than knowing how to build things. It takes maturity, good judgment, clear communication, realistic expectations, and the ability to solve problems in existing homes.
I won’t promise that remodeling will be effortless or that an old house won’t hide a few surprises. But I will tell you what I see, explain your options clearly, and help you make good decisions along the way.

You Don’t Have to Know How Remodeling Works
Hiring a contractor can feel like a pretty big leap, especially if you’ve never done it before.
For this St. Louis Park bathroom, the homeowner was a first-time homeowner taking on her first remodeling project. She had a real budget, a lot of decisions to make, and plenty about the process that was unfamiliar.
Our job wasn’t just to build the bathroom. It was to help her understand the choices, work through what made sense for her house and budget, and make the process manageable.
The finished bathroom mattered. So did having a good first experience working with a contractor.
You shouldn’t need construction experience to have a good remodeling experience.
What Homeowners Say
“I couldn’t have asked for a more communicative, collaborative and efficient group to work with. Nate was thorough in developing a plan to build a net new bathroom in my bungalow that fit within unique space constrictions and passed the requirements for the city. He collaborated on the configuration of the space and gained sign-off from the city in advance of the project to ensure we would not hit any roadblocks.”

“We cannot possibly overstate how satisfied we are with our kitchen remodel. From the initial consult to the final inspection, we were completely satisfied. The communication from Nate was fantastic, the people that were in our space doing the work were all responsive and communicative as well. We felt like a priority and the end result is a beautiful kitchen we will enjoy for many years.”

A Good Fit Matters
Good remodeling starts with a good working relationship
Remodeling means inviting people into your home—sometimes for months—making a lot of decisions together, and trusting someone with a significant investment. It works best when homeowner and contractor are a good fit.
We’re likely a good fit if you want thoughtful, beautiful improvements to a home you plan to live in and enjoy. You care about doing things well, while understanding that remodeling an existing home involves real-world choices, tradeoffs, and occasional surprises.
We’re probably not the right fit if you’re looking for a luxury design firm with a brick-and-mortar showroom, or if you are simply looking for the lowest bid.
Prairie Home lives comfortably in the middle. We focus our time and energy on good design, professional workmanship, straightforward communication, and practical value for the homeowner.
We take pride in getting the details right. But there’s a difference between expecting high quality work and expecting an existing home—or the remodeling process—to be perfect. If perfection is the expectation, we may not be the right contractor.
You don’t need an unlimited budget or a perfectly designed plan before you call. What matters more is a shared desire to make sensible, lasting improvements to a home you care about—and to work through the choices together as the project takes shape.
